Can we normalize doing nothing, please?

I work with kids. These kids are at my program before and after school, and then some of them have sports/dance/music sometimes all of the above before they finally go home, eat dinner, and go to sleep. Then rinse and repeat everyday, and games and more classes on the weekend, etc.

I’m all for extracurriculars, but this turns into the teen who is not only in the school play, but they’re on the newspaper, the football team, and seven different clubs. In college they take double the courseloads, and then once they graduate…what?

They work themselves raw because they arent used to downtime. They’ve been told they can always be doing something, and they don’t know how to relax. This turns into the adult that has anxiety because there’s nothing left to clean, the adult that desperately wants to watch that TV show but can’t force themselves to sit long enough for it.

Then they turn into the moms and dads who spend all their free time ferrying their kids to extracurriculars.

Like, these kids don’t know what downtime is? I told a kid I did nothing last weekend, and he looked at me like I was crazy. He asked what I was doing this weekend and I said “Probably sleeping, mostly,” and he actually gasped. Then he rattled off a bunch of things I could do, to which I had to stop him.

“No, you don’t understand. I plan on sleeping. I’m booked.”

    “But you could–”

    “Nah. I’m just gonna rest.”

It was as if I had said a bad word or something. I asked what he does when he gets sick, and he says he goes to practice anyway. I asked him what he does if he doesn’t feel like going, and he said he goes anyway. I asked when he takes time to rest, and he said when he sleeps at night.

Bring back lazy Sundays. Bring back Saturday morning cartoons. Bring back the idea of relaxing and soaking in your day before moving into the next thing. Bring back the right to breathe, the right to rest.

Bring back mental health days, and taking a break. Bring back taking a walk or watching a show or setting a timer to remind yourself to stop cleaning and relax.

If you’re running at 100% all the time with no time to recharge, then your battery is going to die spectacularly, and probably at the worst possible time.

    Mood

Society is trying to burn us all out.  Tell society to fuck off.

Go take a fucking nap.  You’ve more than earned it and you deserve it.

We HAVE to recharge.  Our bodies, our minds, our everything requires it.

My dad told me when I was young that the way to take a vacation is to work on something different and I thought, and still think, that that’s the most obscene idea anyone’s ever told me to my face.

The thing about knitting is it’s much harder to fear the existential futility of all your actions while you’re doing it.

Like ok, sure, sometimes it’s hard to believe you’ve made any positive impact on the world. But it’s pretty easy to believe you’ve made a sock. Look at it. There it is. Put it on, now your foot’s warm.

    Checkmate, nihilism.

This is a powerful positive message..

I’m literally reading a book right now (Burnout by Emily and Amelia Nagoski) that says this is scientifically sound.

There have been studies done on rats and dogs where they develop learned helplessness in the animals by giving them impossible tasks. Eventually the animals stop trying, even when the task stops being impossible. (I.e. put a rat in a maze with cheese it can’t get to until it develops learned helplessness, then put the cheese somewhere it can get to it and it won’t even try.) But once they show the animals they CAN do something - i.e. physically moving the rat to the cheese - the learned helplessness goes away.

No one can move you to your cheese for you, but the book says DOING something - which they define as “anything that isn’t nothing” can help. Make a food. Work in the garden. Clean a thing. Do a favor for a friend. Call your elected officials.

    Knit a sock.

If you feel overwhelmed by existential despair, do something. It doesn’t have to be big. It just has to be anything that isn’t nothing.

This is really good advice for ADHD people because when executive dysfunction gets bad it’s easy to fall into this pattern of thinking. Do just one thing. It doesn’t have to be your homework, or a chore. It can be something small, it can be something you enjoy. But do just one thing to remind yourself that you can.

This is what “humans want to be productive” really means

We want to make things. We want to do something and at the end of the process see that something has changed. We want physical proof that we did something. We want to be able to point at something and say “I made this”. We want to be creators

Humans have always been creative, long before we had agriculture or had domesticated animals we were making things, not just tools but art and jewellery. Things that you wouldn’t at first glance think were essential to survival, but those artworks and jewellery were every bit as essential as the tools they made to help them make clothes, shelter and hunt.

look i worked in publishing briefly and i am probably not allowed to say this because i’m sure i signed something in my hr paperwork that said so, but also:

It is the biggest open secret in the industry that james patterson absolutely does NOT write his own books, he writes his ideas and some very detailed chapter-by-chapter outlines and then some other author, the ones who are credited in the books as co-authors, are the ones that actually write the words that you wind up reading on the page

and like, okay i guess, but can you imagine having THAT as your career, so easy you don’t even have to write your own books other authors hungry for a paycheck and some exposure write them for you after you come up with the idea, and still you think this fucking industry is biased against white men

just so we’re clear, shit talking of James Patterson over this comment wasn’t just because he doesn’t write his own books and yet is wildly successful

its also because he had a pretty successful imprint that published lots of first time authors (many of whom were women and/or POC) who published under their own names and not his, and then without warning it was turned into an imprint that solely published books that he ā€œwroteā€ in collaboration with other people.

like not only is he a wildly successful white guy who thinks he is being discriminated against, he also screwed over tons of less successful POC and female writers and editors because he wasn’t getting as much credit for their work as he wanted.

    literally fuck James Patterson

So to put it as simply as possible, SNW seems to be saying that the various continuity issues and changes throughout Star Trek are caused by the temporal cold war and temporal agents?

That’s why ENT looks more advanced than TOS, why SNW more advanced than TNG, why all sorts of continuity errors exist? How they’ve moved the eugenics wars from 1996 to mid-21st century?

If so, it’s a clever concept.

Fuck that post going around saying ā€œyou can have coffee in your story without justifying it :) you don’t need to explain everything :)ā€ I want, no, I DEMAND a fully researched ethnobotanical paper on every single food item in your work, if you don’t explain to me where did potatoes come from in your fantasy setting or don’t explain how the industry of coffee works over interstellar distances with full detail you are doing things wrong and I personally hate you and I hate your stupid story, fuck you

Why are your stupid little wizards and knights eating potato stew in your dumb European middle ages fantasy world. Where did they get potatoes from. Where is the center of domestication of potatoes, do you have a fantasy Andean civilization? What are the social and economic consequences of having such a calorie rich crop in cold climates. I don’t care about ā€œthemesā€ or ā€œenemies to lovers with found familyā€, I didn’t ask about that. Where does your idiot space captain gets their shitty coffee from. Is it imported from Earth? Are there coffee growing worlds? Is it an alien species replacement with the same name? What are the social consequences of that? Don’t try to change the subject, I’ll stop pointing the gun when I want, I’m trying to have a conversation here,

honestly really sexy of tumblr to keep follower numbers private. how many people are following me? you’ll never know unless I tell you. maybe it’s a million, or a thousand, or five, or maybe it’s just you. maybe you’re the only one here, all by yourself, unable to see if there’s anyone standing next to you.

and you’d never know, because status here is based on opinion and not numbers; how popular you think someone is is a vibes-only calculation, and besides the chronological algorithms-optional feed, it’s genuinely the best thing tumblr’s ever done.
